An architect has warned homeowners to check their home insurance policy if they are planning on adding a wind turbine to their property .
Writing for BBC News, Ian Blake, associate director at Sutton Griffin Architects, looks at some of the ways people are modifying their homes in order to save on energy costs and to go greener.
One of these methods is to add a wind turbine, taking advantage of inclement British weather and relaxed planning restrictions, and they can provide savings over the long period.
Blake said: Maintenance checks are advisable every few years, and a well-maintained turbine should last more than 20 years.
You should also consider insuring your equipment, whether solar or wind. Your existing home insurance company may offer cover but if not try a specialist insurer.
MS Home Insurance recently announced that it would help customers go green by offering energy efficient replacements for any white good claims in their policies.
