Homeowners have been warned that their home insurance policies may not necessarily cover all possible claims.
According to moneysupermarket.com, many insurance policies do not actually provide comprehensive cover, with accidental damage often not included.
Although a premium policy with much more cover could cost 143 per cent more, the firm has pointed out that, with some insurance companies, it is possible to upgrade for as little as 11 per cent extra.
Julie Owens, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: The most important thing to consider when buying home insurance is what type of cover will suit your circumstances.
I advise Brits to think carefully about what they need to cover and the value of those items. Some people for example may have an expensive bicycle or single items of considerable value, jewellery for example.
She also recommended that people make sure their insurance policy covers accidental damage and possessions away from home.
Getting personal possessions cover could help to provide protection while policyholders are on holiday .
