Holidaymakers have been told they need to make sure they have their valuables covered as personal possessions on their home insurance policies .
According to AXA, over £7 billion worth of electronic gadgets will be taken on holiday by British holidaymakers this summer, although only 49 per cent will be covered as personal possessions.
Amanda Edwards from AXA home insurance said: Personal possessions cover is more important than ever these days. Our lifestyles are changing and we are carrying more and more high value, electronic items with us when we leave our homes - not just when we go on holiday .
Unfortunately, these items are also very attractive to thieves and if you go anywhere without adequate insurance, or fail to look after your property carefully outside the home, you could find yourself footing a fairly hefty bill to replace it.
The firm has pointed out that, on its home insurance policies, personal possessions up to a value of £25,000 can be covered, with a single item limit of £10,000.
Homeowners going on holiday will also want to make sure they ask a neighbour or friend to check their properties while they are away.
