Virgin Money Home Insurance has warned that the current sub-zero temperatures could cause serious damage to some properties .
As a result, the provider is encouraging homeowners to take precautions to protect their properties during the cold snap.
Though precautionary measures do not guarantee avoiding damages in the sub-zero temperatures, a good-quality insurance policy can help homeowners cover the costs.
Grant Bather, spokesperson at Virgin Money, advised that homeowners should not overuse hot water or the central heating system because it could lead to water pipes bursting.
He said: With the Met office forecasting more cold weather over the coming weeks across the country, homeowners should make sure that they have adequate insurance and are taking the necessary precautions to minimize the possibility of freezing or faulty pipes.
According to the Met office, this winter is one of the coldest on record in the UK and the below-freezing temperatures are set to continue.
