Homeowners who escaped the worst of the bad weather over the recent holiday period have been warned that the risk of a home insurance claim is still high.
According to Fortis, homeowners need to take action to minimise the chance of an escape of water following the thawing of snow and ice.
Tips include testing taps, monitoring heating, checking attics and lofts and knowing how to shut water off in the event of an emergency.
The importance of taking action is highlighted by the fact that 20 to 30 per cent of insurance property claims are related to an escape of water.
Furthermore, the average household claim for an escape of water is in the region of £2,000.
"The snow may have thawed in some parts of the country which brings fresh problems and elsewhere snow is predicted again so 'act now!' is the advice," commented Gary Lobb, head of operations for household and travel claims at Fortis.
Meanwhile, uSwitch recently released a guide to help homeowners keep warm in the event of a winter power cut.
