Homeowners are being urged to check their insurance policy if they are experiencing vermin infestation as rats seek shelter from the cold.
Many insurance companies cover homes affected by the problem, and where extermination may be needed, although it is important to read the small print to make sure.
Beyond relying on help from insurance companies, Darren Black, head of Confused.com, also believes people should take steps to tackle vermin themselves.
He said: "Homeowners need to take steps which will prevent rats gaining access to our homes as these pest guests are particularly unsavoury. With more rubbish around and continued cold conditions, a few simple steps will negate the risk of rats setting up home without an invite from the owner."
Among the measures that can tackle the issue are sealing gaps around the home, keeping repair covers in good condition and managing household waste properly.
Leaving out birdfeed can also attract rats, while leaving doors or windows open could also let pests indoors.
According to Virgin Money, another danger emerging from the freezing weather conditions is burst water pipes .
