Government reassures insurance customers with new crime figures

A new government survey has revealed to home insurance holders that crime figures have fallen in England and Wales.

The Home Office report found that burglary rates fell by eight per cent last year.

David Hanson, the policing and crime minister, claimed that, since 1997, there has been a 54 per cent fall in burglaries .

Mr Hanson also paid tribute to the authorities for the way that they have helped to gradually reduce the crime problem.

He added: [The authorities are helping] to secure up to 60,000 vulnerable homes across the country and [they provide] practical help for retailers to tackle shoplifting and theft.

In December, the government launched an advertising campaign designed to prevent home insurance customers from making avoidable claims.

The eight-week initiative advises people how to avoid becoming victims of domestic burglaries through posters and a television advert.
