Dinner parties are causing increase in home insurance claims

Tue, 02 Feb 2010

A home insurance provider has revealed that claims are increasing because of accidents resulting from dinner parties .

Swinton, the insurance company, claims that 67 per cent of its home insurance customers have hosted a dinner party which resulted in an accident in the last six months.

The provider has partially attributed the growing trend to the popularity of television shows such as channel 4's Come Dine with Me.

Further to this, the online survey revealed that 28 per cent of the respondents made the claim based on damage caused to furniture and electrical appliances .

Steve Chelton, insurance development manager at Swinton, warned homeowners to be "extra vigilant" when hosting a party.

He added: "Claiming for damage to items following drunken mishaps can cause contents insurance premiums to rise steeply."

According to a recent report by the AA, home insurance premiums are on the rise, while contents insurance premiums are beginning to fall.
