Britons have been warned that before letting out a room, they must inform their home insurance company and check whether they need to take out additional cover.
Writing for the Daily Mirror, Tricia Phillips explained that in a bid to reduce mortgage concerns, an increasing number of homeowners are opting to take in lodgers.
Before doing so, however, Ms Phillips warned that there are number of measures that must be taken, one of which includes informing your home insurance firm of your intention.
She added that homeowners must also contact their mortgage lender to let them know you're thinking of taking in a lodger and check if this is within the terms and conditions of your loan .
The Association of British Insurers revealed recently that home insurance claims were the most common in 2009, making up nearly half (62,000) of the total number of detected false claims.
