An expert has revealed a number of ways in which Britons can reduce the cost of their home insurance policies .
Speaking to the Scotsman, Julie Owens, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket, explained that supplying the right information is vital, as inaccuracies may invalidate the policy in the event of a claim.
You risk having a claim for burglary of your home turned down if you told the insurer you had the wrong lock on your door, she commented.
Furthermore, Ms Owens revealed that an easy way of reducing premiums include joining a local neighbourhood watch scheme, which is looked on favourably by insurers .
In addition, having smoke alarms installed in your home is also an advantage.
Other helpful things you can do at little expense include having a burglar alarm fitted or fitting a higher standard of lock to your external doors, she added.
Research conducted by moneysupermarket revealed recently that one in ten households made a claim on their home insurance policy last year.
