In the current economic climate, it is even more important Britons are not put off getting vital cover because they don't understand how home insurance works, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned.
In 2008, a total of £8.8 billion was spent on home insurance.
It is therefore vital consumers have the best possible information before buying insurance, the ABI said.
To this aim, the association advised Britons with questions about their insurance to consult their insurer or an insurance broker to make sure they have the right level of cover for their needs.
Earlier this week, MS Money warned holidaymakers to take measures to secure their homes this summer.
This follows a poll conducted by the home insurance provider which found that more than half of people will leave their properties empty while they are away.
In addition, it revealed more than two-thirds of Brits (69 per cent) plan to go away from home for at least one night during August.
