Sainsburys adds up cost of accidental damage in the home

Fri, 08 May 2009

Home insurance provider Sainsbury's Bank has said that the cost of replacing all the contents in the average household in the case of a fire, or other incident, is £44,500.

According to the home insurance company, which looked at data from Loss Adjuster, 27 per cent of house contents are held in the living room, while the master bedroom and the kitchen also hold a sizeable proportion of all the goods stored in the average home.

The importance of checking what items are covered by home insurance has been emphasised by Sainsbury's, which says that soft furnishings, including carpets are not included in some policies.

Neil Laird, manager for Sainsbury's Home Insurance, said: "Quality contents cover doesn't have to be expensive and significant savings can be made if householders shop around, they can take advantage of deals … where there are significant savings to be made."

While the average price of home insurance rose by £3 in the past year, according to the AA British Insurance Premium Index, the company still believes that household cover is good value for money.
