One in 20 houses has booby traps set up on the premises, according to a new survey by home insurance provider Direct Line .
The report shows that homeowners are risking jail in the name of protecting their property from burglars by setting up devices such as hidden trip wires, holes in floorboards, loose stairs and garden pits, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Some people are even willing to resort to violence to protect their homes by using an axe (seven per cent) or a knife (14 per cent), with men more likely than women to confront a burglar - 70 per cent of men compared to 54 per cent of women.
Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at Direct Line, told the newspaper: "While it's natural for many to look out for their family and their belongings, we do not recommend anyone resorts to violence as you put yourself at risk of injury or possibly even death."
Recent research by home insurance provider Halifax showed that 14 per cent of homeowners fear their property being burgled while 17 per cent have not taken out cover.
