Home insurance needed as DIY increases, says AA

Thu, 21 May 2009

Home insurance provider AA has said that the number of people choosing to stay at home to do DIY tasks will rise this Bank holiday weekend, giving more scope for accidents to happen.

According to the AA, Bank holidays are a "peak time" for making home improvements, but out of the 38 per cent of homeowners attempting DIY this weekend, one in ten will experience an accident .

The average cost of these mishaps is £100 but the home insurance provider found in its research that less than half have an accidental damage extension on their cover, meaning this fee will not be insured.

Simon Douglas, a representative for AA Insurance, said: "Budding DIY-ers should check their cover before they get that tool box out. If necessary, accidental damage can be added to your policy."

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents recently warned of the risk involved for those trying to save money during the credit crunch by undertaking home improvements themselves.
