Eating in causes accidents at home, says AA Insurance

Tue, 12 May 2009

With more people shunning restaurants to save money during the recession, home insurance provider AA has said that those eating in could face the costs of culinary accidents .

According to a survey carried out by the company, 46.2 per cent of British people are choosing to cook at home or get a takeaway over going to a restaurant, but 90 per cent said that they pay an average of £100 a year to cover for accidents.

Over 50 per cent have suffered china or glass breakages, 43 per cent have stained items with food spillages, 33.6 per cent have knocked over red wine and 25 per cent have even seen small fires in their home due to their cooking.

Simon Douglas, director of the home insurance provider, said: "As the amount of entertaining being done in the home is clearly increasing, now is a good time to check that you have an accidental damage extension on your home policy."

Homeowners should also be careful when using candles, according to another recent survey by Swinton .

The home insurance company found that homeowners still leave candles burning in empty rooms and that claims have increased in the last few months.
