AA Insurance is urging cyclists to find out if their bike is covered under their home insurance as Tory leader David Cameron sees his second theft in ten months.
The home insurance provider has said that the theft, which happened close to Mr Cameron's house in west London, could indicate a wave of bicycle crime over the summer.
It is not known if the Conservative leader can claim on his home insurance for the robbery – his policy would have to extend to cover personal belongings outside the home and he would have to prove that he had taken adequate preventative measures.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "Mr Cameron has done the right thing by reporting this crime to police. Many cycle thefts go unreported, but doing so is essential for any insurance claim ."
Sainsbury's Finance recently estimated that 579,000 people had ditched their cars to use cheaper forms of transport, including cycling .
