Price comparison site Confused.com has warned that people who apply for home insurance under someone else's name will risk facing prosecution.
The warning comes in the wake of the MPs' expenses scandal, in which Andrew George, Liberal Democrat representative for St Ives, was caught claiming for the costs of home insurance for a house his daughter was using.
Most people attempt "fronting" to make home insurance premiums lower than they should be, but Confused.com said that when policy holders sign the contract, they are accepting that their application details are truthful.
Darren Black, head of home insurance at the site, said: "Honesty is the only policy when it comes to home insurance. Fronting is fraud and those participating in such an activity are showing some front, in more ways than one."
A recent report by the Association of British Insurers found that the credit crunch has led to an increased number of fraudulent home insurance claims .
