Home insurance provider Saga has warned that Saturday (June 6th) is the day on which most burglaries in the houses of over-55s take place.
In an analysis of its data from the past decade, Saga found that the date saw the most home insurance claims from its customers pertaining to burglary, due to more people going on holiday in the month.
According to the company, most burglaries happen while the home is empty, but relying on neighbours to keep an eye out is not as effective as making sure enough security is set up on the premises.
Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman for the Saga Group, said: "If people are going away for a fortnight or just popping out for the evening, they should always check their property is as safe and secure as possible."
Recent research by home insurance provider Halifax showed that 14 per cent of homeowners fear their property being burgled but 17 per cent have not taken out any cover.
