Elderly people are getting the professionals in when it comes to making improvements on their house, according to new research by home insurance provider Saga .
The survey showed that 24 per cent of over-50s rely on professional tradesmen to carry out work on their homes, while 47 per cent get relatives and friends to give a helping hand in jobs around the house.
Some 31 per cent of those older people who enjoy a spot of DIY have experienced an injury on the job, and Saga has warned that home insurance policies should be checked before undertaking any risky tasks.
Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman at Saga Financial Services, said: "Homeowners should check they have accidental damage cover as part of their home insurance, just in case their DIY dreams turn in to DIY disasters."
The most recent Bank holiday weekend saw the number of people choosing to stay at indoors to do DIY tasks rise, giving more scope for accidents to happen, according to home insurance provider AA .
