New research by home insurance provider More Than has found that residents of Liverpool are the most honest and trustworthy when walking past an unattended bike .
In a social experiment, the home insurance firm left a brand new bicycle unlocked in busy areas of city centres across the UK and found that it took Liverpudlians nearly four hours to finally steal the bike.
The national average was two hours and 22 minutes, while the bike placed at London Bridge Station was quickly nabbed in 17 minutes.
Residents in Glasgow and Birmingham come second and third last, respectively, although it took potential thieves over an hour to take the bike in both cities.
Peter Markey, marketing director for More Than, said that home insurance is vital: "Whether you already have a bike or are planning to invest, make sure you have the right cover in place should the unfortunate happen."
As Tory leader David Cameron saw his second theft in ten months recently, AA Insurance urged cyclists to find out if their bike is covered under their home insurance .
