Those anticipating a summer break away in the next few months have been urged to check their home insurance policies before they leave.
Cheshire Building Society said it is important that homeowners have any valuable items covered under their insurance in case they are stolen while the property is empty.
Many people assume that they are automatically covered for any contents under their home insurance policies and they could find themselves facing a hefty bill if their property is burgled.
Karen Torson, product manager at Cheshire Building Society, told those who presume they are covered that "this isn't always the case and it can lead to disappointment if a claim isn't met in full or is declined".
The building society recently said that those who leave garden furniture outdoors overnight during the summer should also make sure they are covered.
