Flooding tips for homeowners

Tue, 09 Jun 2009

Home insurance comparison site Confused.com has offered advice to those worried about their properties flooding over the summer.

The weekend saw heavy downfalls in some places in the UK, providing speculation that British weather may take a turn for the worse over the next few months.

The website received an increased amount of home insurance enquiries about how to stay safe in bad weather over the weekend and Confused.com recommended several tactics.

In the event of a flood, homeowners should move all furniture upstairs, unplug electrical equipment, turn off power supplies and place sandbags in front of the property, as well as having home insurance policy information at the ready.

Darren Black, head of home insurance at Confused.com, said: "I am concerned that the activity on our site suggests people think of home insurance when the weather threatens homes. Comprehensive cover should be in place all year round."

The British Insurance Brokers' Association recently praised the introduction of the flood and water management bill, which will maintain home insurance availability in case of such an event.
