The cold start to the year has led to a 50 per cent increase in floods caused by burst pipes, according to AA Home Insurance .
Research by the firm reveals that people have put in more than £15 million worth of home insurance claims due to such incidents.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, suggested that some people might have been lulled into a false sense of security by recent mild winters.
The cold snap is a reminder that burst pipes can cause serious water damage to both buildings and contents such as carpets and furniture, the home insurance expert said.
As well as dealing with a home insurance claim, people will also face the major hassle of drying out and repairing their home, Mr Douglas added.
For this reason, people should take steps to avoid an incident happening, he stated.
Yesterday, More Than revealed it is set to launch a simplified home insurance product based on feedback from customers.
