Carless householders are being offered peace of mind by one home insurance firm .
RIAS, a specialist insurer for the over 50s, has launched a new home insurance product which covers the costs incurred when someone loses their keys.
New and existing home insurance customers can opt to add Key Protection to their policy for £1.25 a month.
The insurance will cover up to £1,500 towards the cost of gaining access in the event that someone locks their keys inside their house, with replacement locks if required.
Car keys are also covered by the home insurance plan and people can claim up to £225 if they are unable to get home because of the loss of the item.
Janet Connor, RIAS managing director, said: There's no sting in the tail when it comes to making a claim, as policyholders will not have to pay an excess.
The home insurance product should be of real benefit to those who decide to take it out, she added.
Yesterday, Sainsbury's Home Insurance advised people to leave their heating on if they go away to avoid the risk of burst pipes .
According to the firm, there have been £27.56 million worth of claims for such incidents since December 22nd 2008.
