Steve Sweeney, head of home insurance at Moneysupermarket.com, explained that the measure should be seen as an important step in preparing of potential flooding .
People in 'at risk' households should check the details of what their buildings and contents policies cover, as well as the limits and excesses on both, he said.
Householders should make sure they have high quality home insurance in place so they will not be left out of pocket if they need to make a claim, Mr Sweeney added.
People who do fall victim to a flood might have to claim on both their buildings and contents insurance, so it is important to check both, he warned.
Last week, Mark Monterio, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, advised people to make sure they have home insurance in place as recent crime figures have shown an increase in domestic burglaries .
