Home insurance warning over floods after bad weather

Tue, 10 Feb 2009

Home insurance customers should prepare for possible flooding as bad weather sweeps the UK, one expert has warned.

Steve Sweeney, head of home insurance at Moneysupermarket.com, explained that with as snow and ice melts it could combine with heavy rainfall to cause floods .

"Those at risk from the flooding should take expensive portable items upstairs or somewhere else dry," the home insurance expert said.

Home insurance companies will expect people to make attempts to keep the cost of their claim as low as possible, he added.

People should also check what their home insurance policy covers so they are not left out of pocket, Mr Sweeney stated.

Last week, Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, warned that the cold weather is leading to more burst pipes .

He urged people to lag their plumbing to reduce the chances of their property being damaged and of them having to make a home insurance claim .
