Those looking to pop the question should make sure they do not double up on insurance cover for the engagement ring, one expert has warned.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, explained that many home insurance policies will already cover items like this, so people could be wasting their money if they opt for extra protection purchased in store.
Before buying any jewellery this Valentines Day, check what your home insurance covers before you start shopping for that perfect gift, he said.
People should make sure that they are fully insured against theft or loss from the point they step outside of the shop, Mr Pickard stated.
However, it is possible to have too much insurance and doubling the number of policies does not equate to doubling the level of cover, he added.
Earlier this week, Sam Marrs, travel insurance manager for Sainsbury's Finance, advised people not to rely on their home insurance cover for personal items they take with them on holiday in the UK.
