People living in flood-prone areas must check their home insurance policy to see what it covers, one expert has warned.
Emma Baunach, home insurance manager for the Post Office, explained that although most content policies will apply to items damaged by water, people should investigate if anything the own exceeds the limit of cover.
"For instance, you may find expensive artwork and valuables are not included if they exceed the value stated in your policy," the home insurance expert said.
If people do have expensive items, then they will need to get in touch with their home insurance company to ensure that they are covered, she added.
Householders should also ensure their plumbing is lagged to reduce the risk of burst pipes and a subsequent home insurance claim, she warned.
Earlier this week, Steve Sweeney, head of home insurance at Moneysupermarket.com, advsied that rain and melting snow could combine to cause flooding in many areas.
