British women have more than £22 billion worth of clothes and other items tucked away to be used for best, one home insurance firm has revealed.
A study by Direct Line Home Insurance found that the average collection of items used only for special occasions is worth £1,093.
Frances Browning, spokesperson for the company, advised people to make sure that their home insurance policy covers these items.
Over a third of women admit their for best items are potentially uninsured [and] it is worrying that things that mean so much to people may not be covered for damage or theft, she said.
Although home insurance will not protect against the emotional harm caused by the loss of the items, it will help reduce the heartbreak that would be caused, the home insurance expert added.
Recently, Joe Young, spokesperson for Age Concern Insurance Services, warned people not to reduce home insurance cover as part of a belt tightening exercise.
He explained that if someone is burgled, replacing items would prove to be much more costly than paying for home insurance .
