Brits could be attempting to escape having to claim on their home insurance by eating out and ignoring the dining room.
New research by Halifax Home Insurance has shown that around 500,000 dining rooms will have been demolished or turned into a different area as households fall out of love with the spaces.
Although many will be gathering round the dining table to celebrate Christmas with a traditional turkey dinner, an increasing number of people are moving their eating into the kitchen to make more use of space.
Johnny Grey, author of Kitchen Culture, told the Daily Mail: In London, where there is a shortage of space and where the homes are more intensively used, most of our clients have abandoned dining rooms in favour of open-plan living.
Price comparison site moneysupermarket.com recently said that hosting dinner parties instead of going to a restaurant may lead to more accidents being claimed for on home insurance.
