Ethical home insurance company Greenbee has found that claims for accidental damage rose in the first three months of 2009.
Figures from the firm, part of the John Lewis Partnership, show that it experienced 25 per cent more home insurance claims in the quarter year-on-year, with 27 per cent of these relating to laptop computer damage caused by spilt drinks.
Accidents involving televisions, carpets, home decorations or appliances, iPods and games consoles were also high on the list of home insurance claims .
Homeowners are also complacent about damaging their belongings, with two per cent of respondents claiming they are concerned about DIY accidents although 18 per cent end in disaster.
James Furse, managing director of Greenbee, commented on the findings, saying homeowners may be disappointed when they find that most standard insurance policies do not cover accidental damage.
Home insurance provider Sheilas' Wheels recently urged households to avoid dealing with wasp and hornet nests they may find on their property as the insects are at their most prevalent in the summer months.
