Students hoping to go to university after they receive their A-level results today (August 20th) will need to make sure they have adequate home insurance before they move out, according to one firm.
Saga, which offers a student home insurance package, cited Home Office figures which showed that one in three university-goers fall victim to theft every year due to the number of iPods, stereos and TVs kept in halls of residence.
The home insurance company is urging new students going into unfamiliar surroundings to keep an eye out for potential security lapses, such as unlocked doors and windows which could be used by burglars.
Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman for the Saga Group, said: For many students, making new friends and socialising will be higher on their agenda than being security conscious. This could make them easy targets for criminals.
Those heading to university this September may also be interested to know that Halifax is continuing its market-leading student account, which offers an interest-free overdraft of £3,000.
