One in five women have experienced handbag theft, says survey

Mon, 20 Apr 2009

A new report by Direct Line Home Insurance has found that over one fifth of women in the UK have been the targets of handbag theft.

Stolen bags have cost the country more than £582 million, taking into account the average £109 replacement cost of a handbag and its contents, according to the survey.

Nearly one in ten carry around more than £250 worth of items in their handbag, including cash, make-up, door keys, mobile phones and medication.

The most common location for handbag theft is in the pub, with work, shops and clubs being the joint second most frequent place.

Frances Browning, spokesperson for Direct Line Home Insurance, said: "Having your handbag stolen is not only an inconvenience, but it can also cause a lot of stress and worry."

The company provides cover for handbag theft under its home insurance personal possessions policy.

British people have been cutting their home insurance during the recession, according to Kwik Fit Insurance, with half of people reducing their spending by 31 per cent.
