A new survey by home insurance company Endsleigh has found that London is the worst place in the UK for household theft, while Preston is the country's safest city.
The results were revealed in the company's Homes Report 2009, which analyses theft claims from those with home insurance policies with Endsleigh over the past four years.
After London, Nottingham and Bristol were the next worst hit by home burglaries, while Norwich and Ipswich were just behind Preston as the safest cities in Britain.
The survey also found that home insurance customers in Hove were the most likely to have an accident and those in Manchester were the least likely.
Rhiannon Harris, spokesperson for Endsleigh, said: "Clearly some towns and cities represent a greater risk than others but regardless of where you live every householder in the country needs to be aware of the possibility of burglary."
Halifax Home Insurance recently advised homeowners to check if plants are covered by their package, as garden theft claims increased by 63 per cent in the summer months of 2008.
