This comes after the publication of Home Office statistics for October to December 2008 which indicate a four per cent increase in domestic burglary compared to the same period in the previous year.
Despite the real and perceived threat of household theft, the Halifax survey also revealed that 20 per cent leave valuables by windows, in the view of burglars and 17 per cent have not taken out any home insurance cover .
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager for Halifax Home Insurance, said: "We'd recommend householders take a few moments before they leave the house, and before going to bed, to make sure valuables are out of sight."
Home insurance provider Norwich Union recently warned that the recession could cause a rise in household burglary by as much as 50 per cent.
