A new survey by Halifax Home Insurance has found that almost half of British city-residents believe that living in the country is less safe than a more urban environment.
The home insurance provider's Home Is Where Our Hearts Are report showed that 47 per cent of those who live in the city thought the streets in their current area were safer than deserted country roads.
However, 67 per cent of countryside-dwellers felt safer where they were relative to living in a city .
In terms of age, 90 per cent of 55 to 64-year-olds felt unsafe in a city pub on a Friday night, while two-thirds of 16-19-year-olds would not want to walk down a country lane at night.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "The age-old dream of moving away from the big city to set up a peaceful life in the country is not unfamiliar to many urban dwellers, but … it appears that young urbanites feel safer among the hustle and bustle of city streets."
Recent research by Endsleigh found that London was the riskiest city to live in, based on home insurance claims for theft to the company over the past four years.
