Home insurance provider Sheila's Wheels has released new figures which show that beauty products were to blame for an average of £153 in damages per household last year.
According to the survey, 32 per cent of Brits have turned to trying their hand at using beauty products themselves in order to save money during the recession by avoiding expensive salons and beauty parlours .
However, 28 per cent said that household items such as carpets have been damaged by products like curling tongs (85 per cent), hair dye (73 per cent) and nail varnish (72 per cent).
Fifty-three per cent have had bed linen ruined by fake tan.
Jacky Brown, of Sheila's Wheels home insurance, said: "Many hair styling gadgets can reach extremely high temperatures and may cause considerable damage if left on accidentally. That's why having accidental damage cover added onto your home insurance can be invaluable."
Recent research by Axa Insurance found that 20 per cent of homeowners taking up DIY over Easter to save money had had an accident .
