Rural homes experience increased thefts, says NFU Mutual

Wed, 01 Apr 2009

Home insurance company NFU Mutual, which specialises in cover for those living in rural areas, has warned countryside residents to be more vigilant as thefts increase during the recession .

Central heating oil tanks are a target for thieves as the credit crunch hits, with price rises making oil a valuable commodity, and the company has urged rural homeowners to check their home insurance .

In a new survey by the firm has revealed a 14.7 per cent increase in home insurance claims relating to countryside thefts in 2008.

Tim Price, NFU Mutual spokesman, warned home insurance owners to make sure their property is secure.

"If opportunist thieves see gates, floodlights and possible CCTV cameras there's a good chance they will keep going in search of easier pickings elsewhere. On the home itself, decent locks on doors and windows and a burglar alarm are also effective deterrents," he said.

NFU Mutual recently warned countryside home insurance customers to ensure that their deal covers bizarre claims, which can often happen in rural areas.
