Easter DIY will cause accidents and injuries, says Axa

Tue, 07 Apr 2009

New research by Axa Insurance has shown that DIY will see a rise over the Easter weekend, particularly midmorning on Saturday and that some will have to check their home insurance as they may suffer accidents .

Seventeen million people are estimated to tackle household maintenance jobs this weekend, but one in five of those who have embraced DIY in the past have had an accident .

Out of those, over 40 per cent have spilled paint, 28 per cent have created accidental holes in walls and 23 per cent have broken furniture .

Injuries include cut fingers, sprained ankles and electric shocks.

Nick Kidd, head of household at Axa, said: "We're a nation of enthusiastic DIY-ers but people need to be careful. As well as all the other preparation that's essential for a good DIY job, it's worth checking out whether you've got suitable insurance in place."

Home insurance company esure has already urged DIY enthusiasts to make sure valuable equipment in the house is protected and that accidents are covered with the right insurance.
