Freshers' week offers plenty of opportunities for criminals, one home insurance firm has warned.
According to Saga Home Insurance, one in three students are victims of crime each year.
Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of the Saga Group, explains that this can be put down to the fact they do not take enough care over security measures.
He said: "This makes them easy targets for criminals, but by taking a few simple security measures, the risk of becoming a victim can be greatly reduced."
Students should also make sure all their personal items are covered by a home insurance policy so they do not have to replace them, Mr Goodsell added.
Yesterday, the Daily Mail's John Husband claimed that cutting back on home insurance because money is tight would be "crazy".
Writing for the paper, he stated that the cost of such cover is one of the most important bills to keep on top of.
