People must make sure they have home insurance, one firm has warned.
Research by Fairinvestment.co.uk reveals that 38 per cent of people do not have any home insurance, a figure it describes as shocking.
It also found that ten per cent of properties in the UK are at serious risk of flooding, meaning those without house insurance could be left with the clean up bill.
Rachael Stiles, spokesperson for the firm, said: Brits are having to watch their spending as the credit crunch continues to take its toll, but home contents and building insurance should not be compromised when flooding is such a real possibility in the UK.
She also called on the government to improve flood defences to help protect people's properties.
Earlier this week, NFU Mutual announced it is to make an interim payment of £100 to its home insurance customers hit by the floods .
According to the firm, this will help them buy essentials in the short term.
