Almost three-quarters of people think the economic downturn will lead to an increase in crime, according to research by one home insurance firm .
The study, conducted by Allianz Insurance, also found that despite this around half of respondents do not have decent locks on their doors and windows .
A further 57 per cent stated they do not ask neighbours to keep an eye on their property when they go away and 56 per cent do not have security lights.
Mark Bishop, spokesperson for the home insurance firm, explained that people who did install such measures could expect to see a fall in the cost of their premiums.
He said: "Official figures show that a home with no security measures is ten times more likely to be burgled than one fitted with simple security measures."
Last week, a study by Zurich found that 44 per cent of people do not know what their home insurance would cover if their property was to be flooded .
