Home insurance customers not prepared for flooding, research shows

Fri, 17 Oct 2008

Nearly two-thirds (65 per cent) of homeowners are not prepared for a flood, according to research by one house insurance firm.

The study, conducted by Zurich, also found that 44 per cent of people did not know what their home insurance policy would cover if such an incident were to befall them.

Anna Fleming, property claims director for the home insurance firm, claimed that such events are becoming more common.

"The increasingly unpredictable nature of the weather that caused both of these floods, means that there is an urgent need for all homes and businesses to prepare for this risk," she said.

In order to help them do this, Zurich has launched a website to help home insurance customers prepare and cope better with the effects of severe weather, she added. te Yesterday, Darren Black, home insurance expert at Confused.com, warned darker evenings in winter means that thieves will have more chances to break into people's houses.
