People should ensure their home insurance offers the right level of cover for them, one firm has warned.
Mike Powell, consultant of general insurance at Defaqto, explained that those who buy home insurance cover based on price alone risk taking out a policy which does not suit their needs.
He said: "Although in these financially difficult times, the cost of insurance cover is an important factor, the cover provided must be at the forefront of the consumers mind."
Discovering that a home insurance policy does not cover something it was expected too when it comes time to claim will make it an expensive mistake, Mr Powell added.
People should compare all aspects of a home insurance policy, not just price, he stated.
Yesterday, Halifax Home Insurance warned people who own antiques or other collections to make sure these items are covered by their policy.
Some home insurance firms limit cover on individual items if they are not told about them in advance, the firm pointed out.
