Almost 5 million adults in the UK do not have home insurance for their personal belongs, a new survey has found.
The research, conducted by Sainsbury's Home Insurance, found 4.7 million people have not taken out contents insurance, meaning they are not protected.
It found that those living in London are most at risk with 22 per cent of people living their not having such home insurance.
Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said: "It's remarkable given the value of people's home contents that so many do not have cover . Home insurance does not have to be expensive.
"You can spread the cost over the course of a year and some insurers, including ourselves, will not charge for this."
Earlier this week, Karen Torson, partnerships business manager at Cheshire Building Society, stated that people need to make sure that they take steps to protect their house when they go on holiday .
This will make it less likely that they need to make a home insurance claim on their return.
