Home insurance warning over garden items

Fri, 09 May 2008

People who leave items in their garden are putting them at risk of being stolen, one home insurance firm has warned.

Research conducted by esure Home Insurance found that 93 per cent of people regularly leave objects such as jet washers and tools in the garden overnight.

People are also putting themselves at risk by not locking their sheds when they have expensive items in them.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure Home Insurance, said: " Homeowners should check the limits of their insurance policies because some are relatively low and in the event of an 'outdoor' theft not everything may be covered if your shed is bulging with valuables."

He added that the problem of storage space has become more acute in recent years as people convert lofts and basements into living spaces.

Yesterday, David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, warned that cyclists should check their home insurance policy to see if they are covered in the event of their bike being stolen from a public place.
