A significant number of homeowners return from their holidays to find they have been burgled, according to new research.
The study by Churchill Home Insurance revealed that one in ten homes have been burgled while their occupiers have been on their travels .
According to the home insurance provider, such incidents typically see items to the value of £3,288 stolen.
Spokesperson for the firm Claire Foster said: "Arriving back from a holiday or a quick break to discover your home has been broken into is an awful experience for anyone to endure."
Although simply having insurance cannot ultimately prevent burglars from entering their home, it can provide people with "reassurance" that they will not be out of pocket, she added.
In related news, Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line home insurance, recently urged tenants to consult their landlords about what security measures are in place to protect their possessions.
The expert suggested that the majority of landlords view such security provisions as a "wise investment ".
