Thu, 01 May 2008

Those living in rented accommodation should take out home insurance for their belongings, one expert has warned.

According Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line home insurance, contents insurance is vital to anyone and is often cheaper than people expect.

He suggested that people also speak to their landlord about security measures.

"Most landlords see security measures as a wise investment in their property which can actually reduce the insurance premiums they pay," Mr Lowe said.

He added: "Investing in good quality locks for doors and windows will not only offer you peace of mind, but will also reduce your premiums."

People might also want to contact their home insurance company to discuss steps they could take to cut the cost of their policy, he concluded.

Yesterday, esure warned that people who are planning on attempting complex cookery techniques inspired by TV chefs should make sure that their home insurance policies cover accidental damage.
