Less security conscious householders are more likely to have to make a home insurance claim after the clocks go forward, they have been warned.
According to data released by Saga Home Insurance, the burglary rate increases after the switch to British Summer Time .
Paul Green, head of group communications for the home insurance firm, explained that this could be down to people leaving windows open to let in the summer air.
He said: "Many burglars take advantage of an open window, so ensuring yours are closed whenever you are not in the house is essential. It is also best to make sure you do not leave any items outside unnecessarily."
Asking a neighbour to keep an eye on your property will also help reduce the risk of a burglary and subsequent home insurance claim, Mr Green added.
Last week, a survey by Confused.com found that 25 per cent of people do not have home contents insurance .
