Home insurance warning

Wed, 12 Mar 2008

Over two million people in the UK could lack a vital home insurance product, new research shows.

The study, conducted by Sainsburys Home Insurance, found that 1.78 million people do not have buildings insurance and a further 656,000 people say the do not know if they have it or not.

When asked why they did not have buildings insurance, 39 per cent said they did not feel it is necessary, while only two per cent said they could not afford it.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's home insurance manager, said: "Thousands of homes could be at risk from storms this week so it's alarming to see so many without buildings insurance.

"The growing number of weather-related instances really highlights the importance of having adequate cover in this area."

He added that unlimited buildings insurance will ensure people have enough cover if the worst was to happen.

Earlier this week, Richard Mason, director of insurance for moneysupermarket.com, said that the storms sweeping the UK should serve as a reminder of the importance of having a home insurance policy .
